Beach getaways in California

With over 1,000 miles of coastline, California's beach getaways are very popular during the spring and summer months. But don't think of your getaway as just lying on a beach somewhere getting a tan – although there's nothing wrong with that. Your own beach getaway can be anything from the obligatory sunbathing to shopping to visiting historical sites. Even a simple drive down Highway 1 can be just the right thing to relax you and your significant other.

California's many airports make it easy to get to beaches in Eureka, San Francisco, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

Santa Cruz, which is south of San Francisco, has 29 miles of beaches and a classic Boardwalk amusement park. Visitors to be Big Sur State Park and its beaches can camp or stay in cabins, motels, luxury hotels or a luxury yurt. Another popular location is Pismo Beach, which is halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Activities here include enjoying Pismo Pier, digging for clams, exploring sand dunes and tide pools and even sea kayaking.
Huntingdon Beach - Surf City USA - offers plenty of beach hotels, surfing lessons and is very close to Disneyland. Huntington Beach in Orange County is another popular destination. Newport Beach has great surfing, an amusement park and a Christmas Boat Parade.

La Jolla boasts its famous tide pool cove and the Scripps Aquarium. San Diego has many family-friendly attractions as well as its wonderful beaches.

Summer is obviously the most popular time to visit but also the most crowded. Consider a spring or early fall vacation to take advantage of less-crowded beaches.
