San Francisco isn't the top destination location in California, but it has many hidden treasures that Los Angeles cannot offer. The best time to visit San Francisco would be in the spring or autumn, when the tourist destinations aren't so crowded and (hopefully) the weather is mild. September's weather can be quite agreeable, despite the occasional fog.

There are many local and cultural activities in San Francisco that are unique to the area. In February, the Chinese New Year is celebrated in Chinatown with fireworks, a Miss Chinatown USA pageant and a parade from Market and Second to Kearny Street. In the spring you can take in The St. Patrick's Day Parade or the Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, where you can watch traditional Japanese activities like drumming and origami. The San Francisco International Film Festival in April began in 1957 and will feature more than 200 films and videos from 50 countries. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo in the Mission District in May or if you are into running, participate in the Bay to Breakers Foot Race through Golden Gate Park.

The Union Street Art Festival in June is a popular activity, as is the alternative Haight Street Fair at Haight-Ashbury. Into music? The Fillmore Street Jazz Festival in Pacific Heights is a lot of fun for the jazz enthusiast. If Opera is your thing, Opera in the Park in Sharon Meadow at Golden Gate Park is a free concert featuring a selection of arias. Then there's the San Francisco Blues Festival, the largest outdoor blues music event on the West Coast. You can watch the Blue Angels perform aerial magic during Fleet Week at the Marina and Fisherman's Warf in October.
